One man was taken to hospital in critical condition and two other men and a woman apparently escaped without serious injury this morning as a result of a house fire in the 200 block of Bannerman Avenue Wednesday morning.

The man’s condition was later upgraded to stable.

"Thank God they got out," said neighbour Helen Richard, 68.

"There was so much black smoke when the fire truck arrived it was a wonder they could find the house."

Richard, who lives three doors away, said the man who was more seriously injured was the owner of what she called a rooming house. She described him as walking into a waiting ambulance, his face black, and a bandage around his head.

"I think he had a burn on his forehead," she said.

One of the three other residents of the house was taken to hospital for observation as a result of smoke inhalation.

Richard said the owner of the house is about 60 and the other three residents appear to be in their late 30s.

"Well," Richard added, "I don't know where they're going to live now. And they were good neighbours, eh? Didn't bother anyone."

The cause of fire is under investigation.
