An 18-year-old man who drove into a Fort Richmond retention pond early this morning has died from his injuries.
Rescue divers pulled a man from a vehicle partially submerged in a retention pond near Pembina Highway and Dalhousie Drive just after 6:30 a.m.
The young man, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was taken to hospital in critical condition where he later died, police said in a statement Tuesday afternoon.
Police consider the incident "non-criminal in nature."
Neither the name of the deceased nor any further information will be released, police said.
A stretch of Dalhousie between Pembina and Rochester Avenue was closed to traffic for most of the morning.
All that was visible in the water was the red trunk of the vehicle, about 15 metres from the water’s edge. Police stood this morning at what appeared from a distance to be tire tracks that ran down the gentle slope. However, despite the soggy ground, there was no evident sign of damage to the grass or ground.
The water is about 35 metres from the sidewalk along the south side of Dalhousie.
