Three men and two male teens face weapons charges after a shot was fired a few streets away from Health Sciences Centre early Saturday, police said.

Officers were near Sherbrook Street and Ross Avenue around 12:45 a.m. When they heard a gunshot. Seconds later, a Dodge van was seen speeding in the vicinity.

Police caught up to the van and neat Isabel Street and Logan Avenue and nine occupants of the van were taken into custody without incident, police said.

Officers found two sawed-off rifles, a machete and two cans of bear spray in the vehicle.

Police said the suspects were involved in a fight with a group of unknown people Friday night. They retaliated by firing a rifle in the area of Sherbrook Street and Alexander Avenue.

No injuries were reported.

Three Winnipeg men: Chester Roulette, 18; Jordan Berens, 18; and Justin Barrens, 25; are charged with weapons offences. Also charged are two male teens from Winnipeg who were detained at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

Four others were released without being charged.
