Five escape burning house thanks to police

Police cruising in the area saved five people from a burning house in the 200 block of Lansdowne Avenue overnight.

Const. Jason Michalyshen said police were alerted to the fire and rushed to the house about 2:35 a.m.

Officers "immediately began banging on the front door, alerting the sleeping occupants. Once the officers were able to gain entry, five occupants were safely evacuated," Michalyshen said.

Police said damage totalled $195,000, including minor damage to a neighbouring house.

"The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Members of the Arson Strike Force have been notified. Anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to contact investigators at 204 986-6813 or Crime Stoppers 204 786-TIPS (8477)," said Michalyshen.
