Five hurt in head-on crash

A two-vehicle collision near Birds Hill Provincial Park Wednesday night left five people injured, two of them seriously.

RCMP and local emergency services workers responded at around 10:30 p.m. to the collision between a 1996 Ford Escort and a 2006 Ford pick-up truck on Hwy. 202, in the R.M. of St. Clements.

The 15-year-old girl driving the Escort, along with a 21-year-old St. Clements man travelling in the vehicle, have been treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

However, two other passengers in the Escort – a 16-year-old Winnipeg girl and a 22-year-old man from the R.M. of St. Clements – were reported to be in hospital in comas yesterday, RCMP spokesman Const. Miles Hiebert said.

Hiebert could not say whether those comas were medically induced or resulting from the collision.

The 29-year-old Selkirk man who’d been driving the pick-up truck has been treated and released from hospital.

Speed and road conditions are believed to be contributing factors. Alcohol is not thought to be a factor.
