Flin Flon trustees defer drug testing program to committee

Flin Flon school trustees have sent a proposal for drug and alcohol testing in schools to a school board committee for further discussion and research, superintendent Blaine Veitch said this morning.

"We'll be proceeding slowly, if we proceed at all. Obviously, more examination is required," Veitch said.

Flin Flon is considering using breathalyzers to test for alcohol, and saliva and litmus strips to test students who appear to be under the influence for drugs.

So far, the division has not identified who would conduct the proposed tests.

Apparently loca chick likes the giggle weed.

I've been to Flin Flon and my husband grew up there. I can honestly say that this money would be better spent educating against drinking and driving (have you seen the number of roadside memorials there?) and providing a discrete way of students having access to condoms.
Why should everyone be tested anyway? If they cannot catch somebody at school under the influence, they don't have the right to impede their education based on what they do AFTER school. At that point, it is the guardians responsibility to raise a drug and alcohol free teenager.

Wow. Because the students are underage, the school board will need parental consent to test their children. Whats the chances of even 50% consenting? Probably not good. If the tests show alcohol or drugs in the student's bodies, will it go on their student record? Who will have access to this information? What is the next step? Will the child be banned from classes? Also if there is random testing of students there should be random testing of staff as well: zero tolerance. Good luck getting that to pass. If, by some crazy chance, this passes, I think the board will be surprised, to say the least, about the results.
