Sharon Van Etten, The Sheepdogs and Mexican Institute of Sound will headline Big Blue @ Night, the Winnipeg Folk Festival’s alternative night-time stage.
Programming kicks off on Friday, July 11 with blues-rock act Left Lane Cruiser, followed by recent Juno winners The Strumbellas and Saskatoon classic-rock revivalists the Sheepdogs.
On Saturday night, Minneapolis’s Koo Koo Kangaroo — described by folk fest artistic director Chris Frayer as "kids music for adults" — will get the party started while L.A.’s electronic trio Palenke Soultribe and Mexican Institute of Sound — the brainchild of Mexico City-based DJ and producer Camilo Lara — will keep it going well into the night.
Sunday night will be a stunning showcase of folk-rock singer/songwriters, including Old Man Canyon, Australia’s Boy & Bear and Brooklyn’s Van Etten, whose sophomore album, Are We There, comes out next month.
Big Blue @ Night began in 2008 and has become a popular part of the festival thanks to its edgier programming. (The satellite beer tent doesn’t hurt, either.) "The tarp-free setting provides an energetic alternative to the mainstage programming and allows audiences to connect with these incredible performers in a more intimate, fun-filled setting," Frayer said in a release.
