Food and drink sales up 8% in Manitoba last year

WINNIPEG — Manitoba’s food services and drinking places industry rang up the second biggest sales increase in the country between March of last year and March of this year, new figures show.

Statistics Canada said today that Manitoba’s industry saw its sales jump by 8.2 per cent to $128 milliion from $118.3 million a year earlier. The only province with a bigger 12-month improvement was Saskatchewan, at 9.9 per cent.

Manitoba’s month-over-month increase was more modest, at 0.2 per cent. It was the second consecutive monthly improvement, following a 1.3 per cent increase in February.

The February-to-March increases was the smallest among the seven provinces that posted higher sales in March.

Nationally, Canada saw its sales grow by 0.7 per cent to $4.37 billion from $4.34 billion in February. The yearly increase was 5.4 per cent.

The food service and drinking places industry includes bars, lounges, full- and limited-service restaurants, and food service contractors, caterers, and mobile food services.
