Former Bomber Charlie Shepard dies
WINNIPEG — The Winnipeg Blue Bombers have lost a member of their alumni. Charlie (Choo-Choo) Shepard, a fullback/kicker with the dominant squads of the late 1950s-early 1960s, died recently, the club announced Thursday. He was 75. Shepard was inducted into the Winnipeg Football Club Hall of Fame in 1992.
He played for the Bombers from 1957-62 after starring at the U of North Texas and playing 12 games for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1956.
Shepard scored 28 touchdowns during his days with the Bombers and ranks seventh on the team’s all-time rushing list with 3,768 yards.
He had a knack for coming up big in the Grey Cup. He racked up 247 total yards in the 1958 Grey Cup 35-28 victory over Hamilton, scoring one touchdown and was also named MVP of the 1959 Grey Cup.
