Former Sorrento's owner fined $91K for tax evasion

The former owner of a popular Italian restaurant on McPhillips Street pleaded guilty this week to tax evasion and was fined a total of $91,000.

The Canada Revenue Agency said court was told that Bonnie Doering and two numbered companies she controlled pleaded guilty to failing to report $482,000 in income for the years 2003-2006 and evading payment of GST while she operated Sorrento’s Italian Restaurant on McPhillips.

Doering was the controlling partner in both numbered companies.

The case was heard Monday in provincial court.

The CRA said that the restaurant has recently been sold and the new owners had no involvement in the charges.

The fines are in addition to taxes and interest and civil penalties assessed by the CRA.
