Former biker faces 8-year sentence for terrorizing family

  • Print

A former Winnipeg biker is facing up to eight years behind bars for terrorizing an innocent family with a loaded handgun and then chasing after them as they fled in their van.

Kevin Sylvester, 50, appeared in provincial court for sentencing this afternoon. He previously pleaded guilty to possession of a restricted firearm and dangerous driving.

The former Spartans gang member has been in jail since Oct. 1, after he approached a family outside a King Edward Street home and had a verbal confrontation with them.

Sylvester pulled a .45-calibre pistol and the family - with kids aged nine months and 21 months - fled in their van. Sylvester chased them for four blocks, pointing the loaded gun at them out his window, before they were able to peel away and lose him.

After the incident, court heard, Sylvester went to pick up his kids at school. He was arrested hours later.

"He is a danger. He is a true danger to the public," Crown attorney Mike Desautels told Judge Dale Schille in requesting the eight-year term.

It appears the incident stemmed from a case of mistaken identity. Days before Sylvester's outburst, his ex was severely beaten and he left her hospital bedside to go out and find the people responsible for the attack.

"He was out almost immediately looking for who did it," Desautels said.

Defence lawyer Laura Robinson urged the judge to give Sylvester no more than five years.

Schille will decide the case Sept. 12.
