Former cop pleads guilty to child porn charge
A former Winnipeg police constable has pleaded guilty to downloading child pornography on a home computer.
Michael Robert Hall, 31, will be sentenced later this year after admitting Thursday to a charge of possessing illicit images. Additional charges of accessing and distributing child pornography were stayed by an independent prosecutor assigned to the case.
No specific facts of the case were read into the court record. Hall remains free on bail but does face a mandatory sentence of at least 45 days behind bars under recent amendments to the Criminal Code.
Hall was arrested last summer following an investigation by the professional standards unit which began with a tip through the Canadian Child Protection Centre and also involved the integrated child exploitation unit.
Hall is no longer employed with the police service and did not use any city-owned computers to commit his crime, a police spokesperson told the Free Press. The offences occurred between February 2010 and June 2011, according to court documents.
Hall listed his occupation as a deliveryman at the time of the arrest.
