Former group home employee gets three years for sexual assault

The former assistant manager of a Winnipeg group home has been sentenced to three years in prison for sexually assaulting a young female employee he was training.

Olayemi Fatunmbi was found guilty of the attack during a jury trial earlier this year. He was acquitted of a second sexual assault allegation involving another worker.

Fatunmbi returned to court Friday for sentencing.

During the trial, Fatunmbi took the witness stand in his own defence and denied any wrongdoing. But jurors clearly rejected his story.

Both alleged victims testified they were separately attacked over a four-day span while working the night shift at the home for mentally and physically challenged adults.

Fatunmbi, who was their immediate supervisor on both nights, "began acting in ways that were anything but professional," Crown attorney Rustyn Ullrich told jurors in his opening statement

"Things turned from disturbing, unprofessional and a nuisance... into criminal acts," he said.

In the first case, Fatunmbi attacked the woman inside an office by groping and fondling her and attempting to have intercourse. In the second alleged incident which Fatunmbi has now been cleared of, he was accused of removing part of the victim's clothing and attempting to force sex only to have her fight him off and flee.

The two women didn't immediately go to police but eventually learned of each other's experience with Fatunmbi before coming forward, jurors were told.
