Former mayor Murray's name emerges as a possible successor to McGuinty

OTTAWA – Former Winnipeg Mayor Glen Murray is said to be considering a run to become premier of Canada’s most populous province.

Murray is currently the Member of Provincial Parliament for Toronto Centre in Ontario and the minister of training, colleges and universities.

After Dalton McGuinty’s sudden resignation as the Ontario premier and leader of the Ontario Liberal Party Monday night, Murray’s name was one of the first to emerge as a possible successor.

Murray himself has said nothing about the idea yet, but he burst into tears Monday when asked by Toronto media about the prospect.

"I’m really, really proud to be a part of the team. Those are questions for another day. I’m feeling pretty sad. We’ve just lost an amazing premier," he told the Toronto Star.

Murray was the mayor of Winnipeg from 1998 to 2004. He resigned to run for the federal Liberals in Charleswood-St.James-Assiniboia but lost to Conservative Steven Fletcher.

After that he chaired the National Roundtable on the Environment and the Economy for a time.

He was elected to the provincial legislature in Ontario in a 2010 byelection. He was appointed to cabinet in August 2010.
