Foundation tops previous year in total grants given by $1M

The Winnipeg Foundation was proud to announce a banner year when it released its 2011 annual report at the Winnipeg Free Press News Café Thursday morning.

In its 90th year, the Foundation awarded grants totaling $22.1 million to 800 different charitable organizations, an increase of over one million dollars from 2010.

Despite market fluctuations in 2011, the Winnipeg Foundation received more donations than in the previous year. More than 6,000 people donated a total $22 million, an increase of $2.3 million from 2010.

"We’re very proud to serve the city of Winnipeg and we’re very grateful for the generous donors who support our foundation," said Richard Frost, CEO of the Winnipeg Foundation.

More than $400,000 of the year’s gifts came from the Foundation’s 90-Hour Giving Challenge, which was launched in April 2011 to commemorate its 90th anniversary.

Along with releasing the annual report, Frost spoke on the creation of new funds and the up and coming community news commons project, a partnership with the a partnership with the Winnipeg Free Press and other organizations.

"We’re working with the Free Press, Winnipeg Libraries, Red River College and others to develop a community news commons project," said Frost. "Our vision is a hub for news and information generated by citizen journalists. And we’re looking forward to working with the community as this new program takes shape."
