Winners of the News Photographers Association of Canada (NPAC) 2012 awards were announced Saturday night during a gala in Calgary.
The Winnipeg Free Press won big, with honours going to photographers Ruth Bonneville, Phil Hossack, Joe Bryksa and Multimedia Editor Melissa Tait.
Bonneville and Tait won first place in the team multimedia category for One Tough Mudder, a video following the training of Winnipegger Caelin White for the World’s Toughest Mudder Race 2012, where racers are put through a muddy 24-hour obstacle course that tests their strength and endurance.
Hossack and Tait won third in the same category for a project where Hossack traveled to Nicaragua with a team of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists from Winnipeg’s Concordia Hospital for the Operation Walk mission. In four days, the Winnipeg medical team performed 49 knee replacements. Hossack focused on one man in particular, Juan Canda, who suffered for 10 years with arthritic knees that forced him to stop working. Tait masterfully pieced it together.
Bryksa was awarded third place in the feature category for a lively photo of a hearse making a stop at a fast food drive-thru.
The gala took place Saturday night in Calgary during the annual NPAC conference.
