Free Press lauded by Canadian Journalism Foundation

The Winnipeg Free Press was honoured Tuesday for excellence in journalism by the Canadian Journalism Foundation.

The award is given annually to a news organization for overall extraordinary performance at a gala in Toronto.

"This is one of the most important awards in journalism because it’s not for one particular story or series or individual; it’s for the work your newsroom does every day. It’s a real testament to the quality and creativity of the journalists at the Free Press, Free Press Editor Margo Goodhand said.

The Free Press, named the first runner-up for the honour in the large media category, was lauded by presenter Rudyard Griffiths as one of Canada’s "great independent newspapers."

The award winner in that category was the Toronto Star, for the second year in a row.

"We’ve been recognized by the Canadian Journalism Foundation three times in the last four years. It’s a great honour for the Winnipeg Free Press.

The paper was first runner-up in 2008 and an award winner in 2009. It did not enter in 2010.

Managing editor Cec Rosner picked up the award for Manitoba CBC in the category of local/small media.

The Manitoba presence at the awards triggered some light-hearted banter, with gala host, Global National anchor Dawna Friesen quipping, "Another small example of Manitobans taking over the world."

Political journalist and author Robert McNeil (of the former PBS Newshour McNeil Lehrer Report) and veteran foreign correspondent Patrick Brown were awarded with Honorary Tribute and Lifetime Achievement awards respectively.
