Garbage sits on 10 St. James streets after mix-up over collection day

About 200 homes in St. James will receive garbage pickup today following a mixup over their collection day.
City officials said there was a "miscommunication" between the city and a private contractor over garbage collection in St. James on Thursday.
About 10 streets south of Portage -- including Douglas Park Road, Ferry Road, and Deer Lodge Place -- and 200 homes did not have their automated garbage carts emptied.
Winnipeg's solid waste manager Darryl Drohomerski said the miscommunication was the city's fault. Drohomerski said city officials told BFI to stop collecting garbage in the neighbourhood at the end of July, and Emterra -- the new contractor -- to start collection Aug. 1.
Drohomerski said the city told Emterra to start collecting the area's garbage on the new collection schedule, which is a Monday. He said that was a mistake since the area will not switch to Monday as their collection day until Oct. 1. He said residents were told they will remain garbage day 4 until Oct. 1.
"We told the residents the right thing," Drohomerski said. "It was just our fault in communicating to Emterra."
The garbage will be picked up today.
St. James was among the first neighbourhoods in Winnipeg's northwest to test the new garbage carts in 2010.
