Genevière Pelletier new Cercle Molière artistic director
Cercle Molière has announced that Genevière Pelletier is the new artistic director of the St. Boniface theatre company.
The Winnipegger succeeds Roland Mahé, who is retiring after an unprecedented 44-year run at the helm of the 87-year-old Cercle, the oldest continuously producing theatre in Canada.
"We think she’s the best fit; she had everything we were looking for," said board president Paul McKenna Monday. "It was a difficult decision."
Pelletier is no stranger to the theatre, having acted in 20 shows since 1988 and directed another six. During the 2004-05 season she served as assistant artistic director to Mahé.
Pelletier was chosen over "several applicants," says McKenna, who declined to be specific about the numbers of candidates. A committee of executive members of the board, an outside person with extensive theatre experience, and a Quebec consultant were involved in the hiring process.
Pelletier was away on a work trip yesterday and not available for an interview. Her start date has not been set.
The organization has just completed its second season in its new 125-seat theatre on Provencher Boulevard. It has about 1,500 season subscribers.
