Liberal leader Dr. Jon Gerrard would double to six the number of truant officers in city schools and target them in the inner city to reduce dropout rates.
Gerrard also accused the NDP government this morning of deliberately covering up the dropout rates in the inner city, which he said are as high as 50 per cent. However, Gerrard could not provide graduation or dropout rates for any inner-city high school.
Gerrard said that he would double the current contingent of truant officers, which he said are two in Winnipeg School Division and one in River East Transcona S.D., and make them public employees. WSD says it has 2.5 truancy positions, hired from a private contractor. River East Transcona S.D. confirmed that it employs on private contractor.
