After more than a decade in operation, the Globe Theatre in Portage Place Mall will be closing on June 16.

A statement released by Landmark Cinemas, owners of the Globe, explains that due to declining attendance, they are forced to shut the theatre down.

"Recently, it has become increasingly difficult to get films for this location due to the low attendance numbers," said Neil Campbell, COO of Landmark Cinemas Canada, in the release. "It was time to make the hard decision to close."

Landmark owns three other cinemas in Winnipeg and, after the Globe closes, the company intends to shift their focus to revamping one of their more profitable venues.

"It is important for our guests in Winnipeg to know that we will be investing in a major renovation at our Grant Park location," the release states. Those renovations are slated to begin in August of this year.
