St. Paul Saints march all over Goldeyes

The Winnipeg Goldeyes were looking a little green around the gills Friday night after a 4-1 loss to the St. Paul Saints.

Wearing green uniforms in honour of the team’s St. Paddy’s Day promotion, the Goldeyes scored their only run in the bottom of the ninth on a single by Kyle Day that scored Josh Mazzola. They left the bases loaded to end the game.

The Goldeyes (48-36) are now just four games up on St. Paul (44-40) and 4.5 on the Kansas City T-Bones (44-41) for the American Association’s wild-card playoff berth.

St. Paul scored single runs in the second, fourth, seventh and ninth innings. Homers were hit by Ole Sheldon with his league-leading 19th (fourth) and Willie Cabrera (ninth).

  • Goldeyes centre-fielder Chris Roberson was taken to hospital after the fifth inning after suffering an eye injury during an at-bat. The ball bounced off his bat, hitting him in left eye and he was cut.
  • The Goldeyes logo painted on the grass behind home plate was painted by Fish pitcher Ace Walker, also a professional artist, prior to the game. In honour of the St. Paddy’s Day theme, the fish was wearing a leprechaun hat and guarding a pot of golden baseballs.
