Goldeyes snap losing streak

The Winnipeg Goldeyes (27-20) snapped their season-high five-game losing streak tonight in a 3-1 victory against the Sioux Falls Pheasants (25-22) in front of a crowd of 5,124 at Shaw Park.
Pitcher Todd Privett earned the win, improving his overall season record to 2-2- his first victory with the Goldeyes club- in an outing that saw the righty go 6.2 innings, allowing 6 hits, one earned run and six strikeouts.
The victory secures Winnipeg’s top spot in the American Association’s North Division, one game ahead of the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, the same team that recently swept the fish in a four-game series this past week.
Player of the game honours was given to first basemen, Josh Mazzola, who went an impressive 3-4 at the plate, scoring one run.
"It was just a great overall team effort today," said Mazzola, who also pitched in on defense, snagging two line drives to end the fifth and sixth inning, and grounding the final out in the ninth. "We competed all last week against Fargo but things didn’t really go our way. We had a couple bad bounces and I think tonight we came out and we didn’t let that happen again."
Mazzola got things going for Winnipeg in the second inning with a double before cashing in on a triple from teammate Kyle Day. Day would eventually score on the next at bat when David Narodowski hit a double to left field.
The Goldeyes would add to their lead in the sixth inning when Luis Alen scored from third on a wild pitch.
Sioux Falls best attempt for a comeback came in the seventh when they scored their first run of the game but with two on, Pheasants’ Jared Bolden popped up to right field to end the inning.
Dexter Carter entered the game in the ninth to record his sixth save of the season.
The Goldeyes will play game two of a four-game series against Sioux Falls Sunday at Shaw Park. Game time is 1:30 p.m.
