Goldeyes' Rusch serves up show-stopping pitching

The Winnipeg Goldeyes baseball team has had a Rusch of excitement last week with two show-stopping pitching performances.

Pitcher Matt Rusch has been named the American Association's pitcher of the week for last week after the 29-year-old posted a 2-0 record and pitched 15 scoreless innings in two starts against the Lincoln Saltdogs and the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks.

Last Tuesday in a 9-0 win over Lincoln, Rusch held the Saltdogs scoreless for seven innings and allowed only five hits while striking out five batters. Last Sunday afternoon in Fargo in Winnipeg's 4-3 victory over the RedHawks, Rusch did not allow any runs in eight innings of work and struck out a team-high nine batters while allowing only three hits.

In his five starts this season, Rusch has 3-0 record with a 1.72 ERA which is the second-best in the American Association. When Rusch starts, the Goldeyes have a 5-0 record.

It is the second straight pitcher-of-the-week honour for the Goldeyes as Ace Walker won the award last week.

Fabian Williamson will start on the mound for the Goldeyes tonight at 7 when the team hosts Lincoln for the first of a three-game series at Shaw Park.
