Goldeyes acquire left-handed pitcher

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have rounded out their starting rotation for the 2012 season.

The Fish acquired left-handed pitcher Matt Fairel from the New Jersey Jackels of the Can-Am League for a player to be named later Monday.

The 24-year-old starter spent the last three seasons in the Cincinnati Reds organization. Fairel reached the Double-A level in 2010, posting a 5-3 record and 3.98 ERA with Carolina in the Southern League.

The 6-foot-3 pitcher was drafted by the Reds out of Florida State in the 35th round (1,049th overall) in the 2008 MLB draft. He was originally drafted by San Francisco in 2006, but didn’t sign with the Giants.

Fairel is expected to join Ace Walker, Chris Salamida, Matt Rusch and Fabian Williamson in the Goldeyes rotation to start the season.

To make room for Fairel, the club subtracted lefty reliever Anthony Friesen from the training camp roster. Friesen was in camp as a non-roster invitee.

The Goldeyes have 24 players in camp (11 pitchers, 13 position players). American Association teams must declare their 23-man opening day rosters by noon Tuesday.

Winnipeg continues its exhibition schedule in St. Paul tonight (7 p.m., TSN 1290).
