Goldeyes aim to top Pheasants

Winnipeg Goldeyes pitcher Matt Rusch became the American Association's leader in strikeouts with 78 after the right-hander struck out five batters in six innings last night as Winnipeg (38-27) scored a 2-1 victory over the Sioux Falls Pheasants (29-35).

Rookie lefty Rich Hawkins (3-1, 6:15) will take the mound tonight at 6 when the Goldeyes and the Pheasants meet again for the second their three-game set at Shaw Park.

The Pheasants, now on a six-game skid, are expected to start righty Alan DeRatt (3-5, 5.43).

Winnipeg and Sioux Falls will play the third and final game of this series on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Shaw Park.
