Goldeyes lose final road game in Sioux City
SIOUX CITY – Three steps forward, three steps back.
So goes the Winnipeg Goldeyes mediocre travails of late, the latest chapter authored with a 8-7 loss to the Sioux City Explorers tonight.
Less than mediocre, however, has been the production of the Goldeyes’ bullpen, which failed to hold an early 6-2 lead in Iowa – the continuation of an unsettling trend that has seen Winnipeg level off to 16-16 over the last month, and 3-3 on the six-game swing through Kansas City and Sioux City.
With the loss, the Goldeyes fell 6.5 games back of the North division-leading Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, who edged Lincoln 1-0 tonight.
The Goldeyes, now 42-31, still remain two games up on the Kansas City T-Bones in the American Association wild card race – the T-Bones defeated Rockland 10-7 – and three games clear of the St. Paul Saints, who fell 7-5 to Gary.
Winnipeg veteran hurler Ace Walker battled through 5-2/3 innings – allowing seven hits and five runs - and walked off the mound with the Goldeyes holding a 6-4 lead. The first reliever out of the bull pen, Craig James, surrendered a RBI single before retiring the side.
The bottom fell out when the Explorers struck for three runs in seventh off Zach Baldwin and Brian Beuning (5-1), the latter getting pegged with his first loss of the 2012 season.
On the bright side, Goldeyes veteran outfielder Chris Roberson extended his hitting streak to 18 games, finishing 2-for-5 with a run scored and two RBI to improve his team-leading average to .354, while Luis Alen was 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Yurendell de Caster, Jon Weber and Kyle Day each added RBI singles.
The Goldeyes will open a three-game set against the Sioux Falls Pheasants at Shaw Park on Monday night. Game time is 7:05[.m.
