Goldeyes add former Yankee hopeful

  • Print

The Winnipeg Goldeyes have added a former New York Yankees prospect to anchor one corner of their infield.

The Fish announced today the signing of 26-year-old first baseman Cody Ehlers, the fifth position player of the six players signed to date.

His acquisition will also allow manager Rick Forney to keep all-star Kevin West in the outfield. Ehlers is a career .252 hitter with 47 home runs and 290 RBI in 516 games over the last five years in the Yankees’ system, including back-to-back titles in the past two seasons with Trenton of the Eastern (AA) League.

Ehlers’ best year was ’06 when he was the Florida State (A+) League MVP after batting .298 with 18 homers and a league-best 106 RBI. He also topped four other offensive categories that year and led all first-basemen in fielding percentage.

Of the six players signed by the Goldeyes, Ehlers and fellow infielder Wes Long are newcomers. They join returnees West, catchers Jeff DeSmidt and Dustin Richardson and pitcher Brandon Kintzler.
