Greenhouse gas emissions to be reduced

The city of Brandon and the province are teaming up on a $1.275-million project to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Brandon’s Eastview Landfill.

Manitoba Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie said project will eliminate an estimated 57,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 11,000 cars off the road.

With the funding agreement the city of Brandon will now proceed with the design and environment licensing process to construct a facility that will capture the methane gas generated at the landfill.

The landfill gas capture program will also enable Winnipeg’s Brady Road Landfill and BFI’s Canada Prairie Green Landfill, located 17 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg, to make significant reductions to the amount of greenhouse gas emissions they release

Blaikie said in total, this will amount to 195,000 tonnes of reductions per year, or almost one per cent of the total provincial emissions.
