Gunnarson wins top award from International Society of Magicians

Famed Winnipeg escape artist Dean Gunnarson can now claim company with magicians such as David Copperfield and Doug Henning after winning one of the world’s top honours in magic at an event in Shenzhen, China.

He was awarded the Merlin, which is the highest award bestowed by the world largest magic organization, the International Society of Magicians.

Gunnarson is the first escape artist to be given the award.

The society is based in New York with over 37,000 members. It was founded in 1968.

Past Merlin winners include Copperfield, Henning along with Siegfried &Roy, Penn &Teller and Criss Angel.

The event was promoted at a press conference in Shenzhen after Gunnarson accepted the honour from the Magicians’ chairman Tony Hassini.
