Guns-for-cameras exchange a 'huge success': police

Winnipeg police say they continue to be overwhelmed by the public’s response to the unusual gun amnesty program, Pixels for Pistols.
Halfway through the month-long campaign, police have recovered 655 firearms.
"Without a doubt, the program is a huge success," WPS spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said.
The numbers of firearms recovered has far exceeded the number collected during a 30-day amnesty 2010, when Winnipeggers turned in 192 firearms.
However, this amnesty program has been sweetened by an offer from photo retailer Henry’s, which is giving away a digital point-and-shoot camera for every working firearm turned in to police during the month of November.
Michalyshen said police picked up 112 firearms on the second day of the campaign, the most recovered on a single day.
"We’re right at the halfway point of the month and we’re optimistic that this momentum will continue."
