Gypsy moth spraying postponed
The city aerial spraying campaign against the European gypsy moth will have to wait a day.
An airplane was to fly over the Minnetonka and Pulberry neighbourhoods and spray the organic, biological product Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki (Btk) to kill the moth’s caterpillars before they become adults. However, Monday's rain has postponed the spraying until Wednesday morning, the city said.
The spray is the same agent the city uses to battle cankerworm infestations.
The area sprayed is bounded by St. Vital Road to the north, Cabot Crescent, Darwin and Metz streets to the east, Harry Collins and Riel avenues and Winslow Drive to the south and the Red River to the east. It includes St. Vital Park, St. Vital Cemetery and the Riel House National Historic Site.
The European gypsy moth feeds on foliage of trees and shrubs and threatens Winnipeg’s urban forest, said Taz Stuart, the city’s chief entomologist.
