Hall of Fame coach stops by Free Press News Café

One of the most successful coaches in NCAA hockey history dropped by the Winnipeg Free Press News Café Friday morning on his way into the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame.

Grant Standbrook was a longtime assistant and recruiting co-ordinator at the University of Maine, helping the Black Bears win two championships and reach 11 Frozen Fours.

The Winnipeg native has recruited and coached 34 All-Americans and 10 Olympians. He has also coached 68 NHL players, including Chris Chelios, Tony Granato, Gary Suter, Paul Kariya and Dustin Penner.

He will be inducted as a builder at the annual Hall of Fame dinner Saturday evening. Other inductees include:

  • Clara Hughes (cycling and speedskating);
  • Mike Ireland, (speedskating);
  • Ed Belfour (hockey);
  • Morris Glimcher (builder);
  • Kelly Hand (sailing);
  • Harry Langford (football);
  • Sandy (Newsham) Maskiw (softball);
  • the 1978 and 1980 University of Manitoba Bisons volleyball teams;
  • the 1992-95 University of Winnipeg Wesmen women's basketball teams.
