Winnipeg’s Janet Harvey and Michelle Montford are both just one more win away from qualifying for Monday’s playoff round at the Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries Womens Curling Classic at Fort Rouge Curling Club.
Harvey advanced to a B-side qualifying game with an 8-5 win Sunday morning over Alberta’s Renee Sonneberg, while Montford advanced to a separate B-side qualifying game with a 9-4 win over Saskatchewan’s Amber Holland, also on Sunday morning.
Montford will play Switzerland’s Michelle Jaggi on the 12:30 p.m. draw for the right to advance to Monday’s 8-team playoff round, while Harvey will play on the 4 p.m draw against Edmonton’s Valerie Sweeting for the same stakes.
Sweeting advanced to face Harvey with a 5-3 win Sunday morning over reigning world women’s champion Eve Muirhead of Scotland, while Jaggi advanced to face Montford with a 7-4 win over Saskatchewan’s Trish Paulsen.
The B-side qualifiers will join Winnipeg’s Jennifer Jones and Russia’s Anna Sidorova, who qualified from the A-side on Saturday, in Monday’s playoff round. Four final playoff qualifiers will be determined on the C-side Sunday evening.
The 25-year-old Montford -- daughter of reknowned Manitoba icemaker Eric Montford -- has been on a tear at Fort Rouge this weekend, winning her last three games in succession over Olympic trials bound Chelsea Carey of Winnipeg and former world champion Bingyu Wang of China on Saturday and then today over the 2011 Canadian women’s champion in Holland.
Also on Sunday morning at Fort Rouge, Barb Spencer won an all-sisters, C-side battle with Darcy Robertson by a score of 5-2. The result eliminated Robertson and advanced Spencer, her sister and longtime former teammate, to face New Brunswick’s Andrea Crawford at 12:30 p.m.. Crawford advanced with a 7-2 win Sunday morning over Ontario’s Tracy Horgan.
