Hawerchuk honoured

Conservative MP Rod Briunooge presented Dale Hawerchuk, a sports hero in this city, with the Queen's Diamond Medal at centre ice, only it wasn't in Winnipeg.

The Winnipeg South MP accompanied fellow MP Patrick Brown, from Barrie, Ont., to present the Commonwealth honour in that riding.

Hawerchuk accepted the medal prior to the opening face-off between the Barrie Colts and the Peterborough Petes.

The NHL Hall of Famer is the coach of the Barrie Colts.

Bruinooge nominated Hawerchuk for the honour.

"Dale Hawerchuk continues to give back to Winnipeg through his annual charity golf tournament and helping the Jets with their selection of Mark Scheifle," Bruinooge, said in a statement released Sunday.

"What makes Dale so deserving of this honour is that he was not only an amazingly talented player and skilled coach, but he shows tremendous class and is a wonderful role model as well," the MP said.
