Homer Simpson bongs, not to mention drug paraphernalia with likenesses of Scooby Doo, Spider-Man and Star Wars droid R2-D2, were confiscated Wednesday when the RCMP raided three city businesses.
The RCMP’s Federal Enforcement Section, with the aid of the Winnipeg Police Service and Manitoba Finance, executed search warrants at three retail outlets The Joint on St. Mary's Road, Pembina Highway and Marion Street.
Police said Thursday the businesses had merchandise on shelves that contained images of or replicated copyright protected images. Seizures include copyright images belonging to Angry Bird, Looney Tunes, Hanna-Barbera and Nintendo.
One man was arrested during the search and is facing charges of possession of a controlled substance (marijuana) for the purpose of trafficking.
No formal charges have been laid at this time; however, police continue to investigate under the Copyright Act.
According to their website, The Joint has a new location in Saskatoon in addition to the three Winnipeg stores.
Their slogan is "The Dopest Headshop on the Prairies" and they boast of carrying "a wide range of smoking paraphernalia including but not limited to bongs, pipes, bubblers, Winnipeg's largest selection of poppers and bluntarillos, vaporizers, bowls, grinders, scales, baggies, stash containers, detox kits, hookahs and more."
