Hear sirens? See lights? Pull to the right, police remind motorists

Don’t know what to do when a police or emergency vehicle is approaching you from behind with sirens wailing and lights flashing?
Pull over to the right.
That was the message — or plea — from city police to the public on Friday.
They say many motorists still don’t know what to do when emergency vehicles are approaching them. Some stop short and freeze in place, others ignore the noise and the lights altogether, while still others pull in front of oncoming emergency vehicles, blocking their path.
None of those reactions is correct. The thing to do is pull over to the right and stop.
If you’re stopped at a red light, look around and, when it’s safe to do so, pull into the intersection to allow the emergency vehicle to pass. It’s legal to do so.
Police say that allowing emergency vehicles to move quickly can save a life or solve a crime.
