Hearing begins in fatal vehicle collision

  • Print

A preliminary hearing began Wednesday for a 20-year-old man facing a charge of criminal negligence causing death for a fatal vehicle collision on Dugald Road in September 2011.

Vann Hansell also faces charges related to impaired driving offences and a weapons-related offence.

There is a ban on publication of evidence presented at the hearing, which is expected to conclude Thursday.

The head-on collision occurred at about 8:30 p.m. on Sept. 6, 2011, on Dugald Road near Goodyear Avenue. Winnipeg police said at the time that an east-bound Toyota pickup swerved into the westbound lane to avoid rear-ending traffic that was stopped because of construction, colliding head-on with a westbound Dodge Neon.

The driver of the Neon, Mark Derry, 53, was taken to hospital in critical condition but died later from his injuries.
