High-tech, environmentally-friendly garbage trucks to run on natural gas

Environmentally-friendly garbage trucks will roll out on city streets next week.

On Monday, Winnipeg will switch over from manual garbage collection to new automated garbage and recycling carts. Emterra has a five-year contract to do the collection, and said Winnipeg will have the largest collection fleet in he country that runs on natural gas.

Business development manager Paulina Leung said the 60 trucks are expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 20 per cent. Over the five-year contract, Leung said the fleet will reduce emissions by 2,000 metric tonnes.

The company has constructed a natural gas fueling station at its Henry Avenue facility.

"This is the most high-tech fleet in Canada," she said.
