City police are investigating Winnipeg's second homicide of 2014 after a man died from injuries he sustained during an assault on the Osborne Street Bridge on Friday night.
Officers responded to the bridge about 11:30 p.m. and found two men who had been seriously hurt during an assault. Both were transported to hospital in critical condition, however, one of the victims died overnight.
Friends have identified the deceased as Joshua Bentley.
Specific details of Bentley's death were scarce Saturday, but even those who didn't know him are paying their respects at a makeshift memorial near a splatter of blood-soaked snow on the Osborne Street bridge.
Grace Eidse, whose home overlooks the bridge, was watching a movie Friday night when she heard men's shouts followed by police and ambulance sirens.
"But I didn't think anything of it," she said.
The next morning, when she saw that investigators had taped off the area, she checked news reports that pointed to suspected murder and slipped down to place a candle and a butterfly poster near the scene. A bouquet of flowers soon appeared beside Eidse's tokens of remembrance, allowing passersby to scatter blooms along the spot as they walked by, some stopping to snap cell phone photos.
"A flash memorial is happening here on Osborne Street. It's a busy place," said Eidse, adding that she's never before seen evidence of such a violent crime in her neighbourhood.
"We want to shed peace on the violence," she said.
Members of the Winnipeg Police Service homicide unit continue to investigate. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at (204) 986-6508 or CrimeStoppers at (204) 786-TIPS (8477).
