The City of Winnipeg is celebrating the accomplishments of the Jennifer Jones curling team by honorarily renaming a street after the Olympic gold medalists.
Regal Avenue, where the St. Vital Curling Club is located, will also be known as Team Jones Way, the city announced this morning. Officially the street name will not change -- it will still be known as Regal Avenue.
The Jones rink, consisting of third Kaitlyn Lawes, second Jill Officer, lead Dawn McEwen, beat Sweden in the gold medal final in the women’s curling event in Sochi last week. The group went undefeated in their time at the Winter Olympics, compiling a perfect 11-0 record.
"Winnipeggers have always been extremely supportive of Team Jones and are very proud of the team’s record-breaking Olympic achievement," Mayor Sam Katz said in a statement. "All of the members of the team are ambassadors for Winnipeg and the sport of curling and it is fitting to honour them with Team Jones Way."
A ceremony to unveil Team Jones Way is scheduled for later this year.
