Housing assessment appeal deadline nears

WINNIPEG — If you think the city of Winnipeg has placed the wrong value on your home, you only have a few more hours to file an appeal.

The deadline for appeals of your new property assessments is today at 4:30 p.m. Downloadable appeal forms may be found at winnipeg.ca and must be dropped off at the Board of Revision, 1-756 Pembina Hwy. or faxed to the board at 986-6999.

The city's taxation and assessment department is expecting a large number of appeals this year. Residential property values in Winnipeg increased by an average of 78 per cent between 2003 and 2008, the year the new assessments were made.

But a higher assessment for your property does not necessarily mean you will pay more property taxes in 2010. Your relative share of the tax pie will only increase if the increase in value of your home exceeded the 2003-to-2008 average.

In other words, if your home was reassessed to $178,000 in 2008 from an earlier value of $100,000, you will not pay an extra cent next year — unless city council votes to lift the 12-year freeze on property taxes.
