Human rights awards winners announced

A ceremony next month will recognize Manitobans who have made a significant impact on human rights.
Winners of the Annual Human Rights Commitment Award of Manitoba include Louise Simbandumwe, who founded the Run for Rights and runs the Asset Building Programs at SEED Winnipeg, as well as Jane Burpee, education coordinator at the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society.
The award also will be going to the Rainbow Resource Centre, a centre which runs programs for people in the Manitoba who are gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgendered or two-spirited. Students and young adults under the age of 25 years old will also be getting awards to recognize their contributions.
The awards were announced today by the Manitoba Human Rights Commission, the Manitoba Association for Rights and Liberties and the Canadian Human Rights Commission.
The ceremony is Dec. 6 at the United Way Building at 580 Main Street. It starts at 6 p.m., and people who want to attend are asked to register online or call 945-5112.
