Humane society nabs dogs roaming wild after owners' death

WINNIPEG — Eight dogs running loose in East St. Paul after their owners' sudden death have been captured.

Aileen White, spokeswoman for the Winnipeg Humane Society, said the shelter recently received multiple complaints regarding 10 loose dogs in the RM of East. St. Paul. She said the owner lived on a large property, and unexpectedly died recently.

Since the municipality is beyond city limits, White said the humane society coordinated with the provincial veterinarian and rural authorities to capture and care for the animals.

White said all but two are in the custody of officials, including four dogs who are pregnant. The dogs will be transferred to the humane society today to be assessed and eventually adopted or fostered out.

"You don't want a big (dog) pack running wild," White said. "The community realized this and wanted to make sure these dogs were captured and cared for."
