Hundreds of cows believed to have died in fire

Several hundred dairy cattle are believed to have died  in a dairy barn fire in the Ste. Anne area Monday night.

RCMP Cpl. Sean Grunewald said total damage is estimated at $8.5 million.

"We’re still trying to determine how many cattle survived and how many were destroyed," Grunewald said. "The fire smouldered all night long."

Grunewald said the fire was called in at about 6:15 p.m. Monday. Officers arrived to find the barn, located off Highway 302 in the RM of Ste. Anne, engulfed in flames.

Volunteers from several area fire departments answered the call and were able to put out the fire, but the barn was destroyed.

Grunewald said the fire does not appear to be suspicious but staff from the Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Steinbach RCMP detachment are investigating.

No one was injured in the fire.

More details are expected later today.
