Hurry, there are good seats right by the water

Just when you thought it was safe to go back to a beach screening ....

That might be the pitch for the 2012 Gimli Film Festival, which starts Wednesday and enjoys something of an official kickoff with the 10 p.m. beach screening of Jaws 2, the 1978 Jaws sequel boasting arguably one of the most famous taglines in movie marketing history: "Just when you thought it was safe go back in the water."

In the film’s scariest scene, Amity Island Police Chief (Roy Scheider) investigates boat wreckage only to be shocked by the remains of a corpse that rolls in on a wave. The scene promises to pack more of a punch screened on Gimli’s waterfront screen.

The festival’s new programmer, Joy Loewen, says the film will provide continuity from last year’s successful beach screening of Jaws, but you can expect new and exciting additions to the fest, now in its 12th year.

"With the beach films in particular, you do have some of those retro hits, because even if you have seen them, you haven’t seen them in a venue like this," Loewen says.
