Hydro tower stands out for energy efficiency

Manitoba Hydro's downtown headquarters stands above all office buildings in Canada when it comes to energy efficiency.

At a cermony this morning attended by Premier Greg Selinger and the building's lead architect from Toronto, the Green Building Council of Canada awarded it with its highest certification -- LEED platinum. That made it the first office building in Canada to achieve this status.

"It's a landmark building," said Thomas Mueller, the building council's president.

The Portage Avenue building uses roughly a quarter of the energy of a conventional office building of its size, saving the Crown corporation about $500,000 a year.

The Hydro tower is believed to be the most energy efficient office building in North America.
