Ice-dancing, lip-synching hockey players a YouTube hit

Players on the Virden Oil Capitals were happily surprised to find tens of thousands of people have watched a holiday-themed YouTube video they made on a lark.

The video features mustachioed defenceman Curtis Houlden and other members of the junior league hockey team ice-dancing and lip synching to the holiday classic It’s The Most Wonderful Time of the Year. It has been viewed more than 35,000 views since it was posted to the video site last Thursday.

Lindsay Gullett, marketing manager for the team, said he never expected this kind of response.

"When I was trying to convince the team to do it I tried to sell it by telling them the video could get two or three thousand views, and they would be famous," Gullett said jokingly.

"Now we’re all playing fun at Curtis and telling him he’s not going to be on the team next year because he’ll be in Hollywood instead."

Houlden, who was eager to get involved with the project, said the team has been getting very positive response from friends and family. "Everyone loves it, they all think it’s hilarious."

The team's considering doing another video next holiday season since this one was so popular, Gullett said.
