A standing hearing will take place to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the 2010 suicide of an 18-year-old Winnipeg woman.
Identified only as M.A., the woman was found hanging from a tree outside her home on Aug. 30, 2010 and taken to the Health Sciences Centre where she was pronounced dead.
In 2008, M.A. had been sentenced to intensive rehabilitative custody and supervision under the Youth Criminal Justice Act. She was conditionally released from the Manitoba Youth Centre on July 28 that year and lived with her sister until the time of her death.
Under the Fatality Inquiries Act, an inquest has been called by the chief medical examiner. Inquests explore the circumstances and events leading to deaths for the purpose of finding out what, if anything, can be done to help prevent similar deaths from occurring in the future.
Before the inquest can begin, the judge will decide who can participate and question witnesses by having standing at the inquest. Those interested in applying for standing should contact Rob Gosman, inquest counsel, at 204-949-0882 in Winnipeg or email@example.com by Sept. 24.
The standing hearing will be held on at 9 a.m., Sept. 25 in Courtroom 405 at the Manitoba Law Courts on York Avenue.
