Investigation ordered into Sagkeeng Child and Family Services

Family Services and Labour Minister Jennifer Howard has ordered an investigation into Sagkeeng Child and Family Services after current and former case workers told the CBC the agency is in crisis.

On Tuesday, Howard wrote to Elsie Flette, CEO of the Southern First Nations Network of Care asking her to ensure that Sagkeeng "has the tools needed to provide the quality of service we both expect from our system." The Southern Authority, as the network is known, supervises Sagkeeng and other aboriginal CFS agencies.

In her letter, Howard sought confirmation "that the children identified in recent reports have been seen and are safe."

Flette was not immediately available for comment this morning.

Sagkeeng Child and Family Services has been in the limelight before. An investigation was launched after a two-year-old in its care, Gage Guimond, died in 2007 after being placed with a relative. Shirley Caroline Guimond later pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.
